3 Adventures to Have in Honolulu

With my love of travel, also comes my love for adventures. What kind of adventures you ask? Well, ALL. I love any degree of physical activity in which I break out of my comfort zone, face my fears, and have an all-around good time. From zip-lining to sky diving, I’m willing to try it all. I recently visited Honolulu, Hawaii, where I discovered an abundance of activities and adventures offered in this beautiful city on the island of Oahu. If you’re looking to visit soon, here are 3 adventures you should consider:

Snorkeling at Hanauma BayOne of Oahu’s most beautiful beaches, Hanauma Bay is actually a natural body of water that formed in a volcanic crater. Tens of thousands of years ago, there was a volcanic burst on the island in which the walls collapsed and the ocean pressed in, thus creating Hanauma Bay. A popular tourist destination on the island, many come here to snorkel, relax, and sunbathe. After receiving a brief lesson on the history of Hanauma Bay, visitors are free to enjoy this small beach and  the many sea creatures spotted here, including fish and turtles. If you’re big on snorkeling, this is a must visit when in Honolulu. The scenery alone is breath taking!

ATV Riding at Kualoa Ranch: I’ve always wanted to ride an ATV, so when I found out about the ATV Tour at Kualoa Ranch, I had to go! For 1 or 2 hours (depending on which tour you choose), you can ride an ATV through the infamous Kualoa Ranch in which you will pass by famous movie and TV locations, the Pacific Ocean and scenic valleys. When I say that this tour was AMAZING, I mean it was absolutely astonishing. There were several times in which I couldn’t believe how beautiful the scenery was. Riding the actual ATVs was also very fun as the course took you through a bunch of remote areas, past a few animals, and through the water. If you want an adventure, the ATV Tour here is sure to fulfill your expectations and provide you with a nice thrill.

Also at Kualoa Ranch, you can try horseback riding or check out the movie sites tour, in which you’ll pass by the locations where movies like ‘Jurassic Park,’ ’50 First Dates,’ and the TV show ‘Lost’ were filmed. Be sure to also visit the lovely beach right across the street for some peace and relaxation.

Learn How to Surf: Perhaps I’ve watched too many surfing movies growing up, but another item that has long been on my bucket list was learning how to actually surf. Known as the ‘birthplace of big wave surfing,’ I didn’t think it was right to come to Hawaii and not take lessons, so I did. Located on Waikiki Beach, my cousin and I took our lessons with Aloha Beach Services.

We were provided a shirt to put on and one-on-one training with a professional surf instructor, who called himself ‘Brother Brother’ (pronounced bra-da, bra-da). Before entering the water, we were taught surfing techniques on the board including how to stand, push yourself up, and ride a wave. After finishing this very important lesson, we went out into the water to begin our adventure.

Eager, nervous, and excited, we paddled to a shallow end of water where ‘Brother Brother’ waited and picked the waves for each of us to ride. A little scary at first, the entire experience turned out to be tons of fun! Standing on the surf board while being pushed by a wave is an indescribable feeling and one that I was glad to have felt. If you want to learn how to surf, I definitely recommend taking lessons while in Hawaii. It is sure to be a great time! Be prepared to fall, laugh and enjoy the moment!

Hike Diamond Head: Another popular tourist attraction, Diamond Head State Monument is a volcanic tuff cone located near the edge of the Waikiki Coast. One of the most recognized Hawaii landmarks, Diamond Head is notorious for its hiking trails and stunning views. For a beautiful and fun hiking trip, be sure to visit Diamond Head while on your visit to Honolulu. The park is open daily from 6 am to 6 pm.

Sky Diving: One day I’ll get around to actually doing this, but apparently sky diving while in Hawaii offers up amazing views of the islands and Hawaiian coast. If sky diving has long been on your bucket list, you may want to consider crossing it off on your next trip to Honolulu.

Jet Ski & Parasailing: Parasailing and Jet Skis are two of my favorite activities to do on any vacation. Although both of these activities can be done on any beach, I surprisingly found them to be relatively cheap in Hawaii, so take advantage of this! If you’ve never tried it, or enjoy doing them, be sure to check out one of the many jet ski and parasailing deals offered here.
